|Lake Nakuru in Kenya is a Soda Lake – strongly alkaline. The lake has abundant algae attracting birds like Flamingos. Nakuru means dusty in Maasai language (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Nakuru ). I visited this lake to see flamingos. Unfortunately, I did not see any Flamingo and one of the local experts pointed out that Flamingos migrate according to the alkaline level in the lake water. |
I saw large number of other birds and wild life and the lake was full of Great White Pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus). An interesting study shows that the pelicans migrate from Europe during fall and return back during spring. While travelling, they break their journey in Israel (http://www.argos-system.org/doc/argos/documents/publications/newsletter/nslan51/white_pelican_en.html ). The study found out that after leaving Israel in five days, they crossed Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania and reached the Danube. Weighing upto 15 Kg , these pelicans are one of the heaviest airborne birds in the world (http://www.africa-expert.com/about-kenya/the-great-lakes/lake-nakuru/ ).
Lake Nakuru with abundant supply of algae particularly Spirulina algae provide a fertile ground. The large scale availability of Tilapia attracts pelicans towards this lake for feeding and breeding.

Hi Bala, just a bit underxposed but caught in a great moment with this special light, perfect to warm up the colors, great detail too,i like it! Have a nice WE and thanks,Luciano
like the atmosphere you create with this beautiful light and the composition of your image.
Welcome to TrekNature most importantly. Enjoy your stay on the site while posting your photos and commenting of others. This image is fantastic in my opinion, I don't see it undexposed at all. All details on the pelicans' plumage are very well visible. Composition's beautiful with the big pelicans in focus, their reflections in the foreground and other birds in the background. From them we can also check the horizon isn't tilting. :-) Superb photo overall, and decent note. Bravo! We hope to see many other images of you, such beautiful ones as this.
Best regards from Ireland, László
