[Notas - Normas] Nota do Artista
I was standing in the safari vehicle and while crossing a bridge I saw this bird in Lake Nakuru, Kenya. I almost missed it since there was perfect camouflage vis-à-vis the bird’s color, the color of water and the brown soil. It was not probably a natural camouflaging process. The bird popularly known as a Hammerkop (Scopus umbretta) is so called because of its long bill and crest at the back looking like a hammer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamerkop ) . It is a sedentary bird found mostly around water bodies in Africa and parts of Arabia.

There are some interesting facts about Hammerkop
1.They have “ceremonies" in which they run circles around each other, all calling loudly, raising their crests, fluttering their wings
2.Even though the male and female may not mate, they will enact “false mounting”.
3.The role of the web-feet is still not clear.
4.They build huge nests sometimes more than 1.5 metres across with 10,000 sticks which can support a man’s weight even though the weight of the bird is around 500 gms. This is a strange aspect yet to be fully understood by modern science.
5.There are cultural and folklore aspects about Hammerkop. Certain African cultures believe that any one affecting the bird or its nest will be troubled. Some other cultures believe that the bird is an evil and has to be kept in a distance. These believes have helped in protecting the bird.
