Reminds me of . . . – sunsets first of all, but also reds & gold, especially if there is some water to add atmosphere. SA is in essence a dry country. We have very few perennial rivers, & none of them is negotiable by boat, like so many of the rivers in Europe & the Americas. Ours are generally dry most of the year, just dry sand & pebble beds. On the eastern side of SA, there are a few perennial rivers, but their flow volume is dependant on the rainfall. This is the Sabi River, & I am on a bridge/wall that dams a substantial part of the river next to the Lower Sabi Rest Camp in KNP. This picture was taken in 1999, before the 2 000 floods that changed the face of KNP forever. In engineering terms, we talk of 1:20 to 1:100 year floods. You have to take the level of the flood line into consideration when contemplating new developments near rivers or their floodplains, to ensure that the houses, buildings, whatever, will be above a specific flood line. The flood that hit KNP during 2 000 was the biggest in living memory. In the lower part of the park, some 40 km downstream from Lower Sabi, Bushman paintings, estimated between 2 000 & 20 000 years old, were damaged by this flood. 600-year-old trees were plucked out & snapped like matchsticks. The river’s floodplain was overrun for kms, & a new landscape met the eye the next day. So, this scene is gone forever, but the memory lingers. . .Nikon F90X, 28-200 lens, Sensia 100 slide, handheld, is about all I remember. Scanned one Epson flatbed, some USM and curves.

Une jolie composition pour cet agréable paysage, cela nous dépayse un peu... Et les couchers de soleil sont souvent émouvants.
Well done !

It's another fantastic shot...composition, fantastic, colours perfect.

Hey guess what? It's great!

Well done.

Callie, Great sunset! The water seems to trail in to meet up with the setting sun & the captured reflection is magnificent!! Sunrise/sunsets were my first & primary area of interest when I began taking digital photos..Thanks!

Het lijkt wel een beetje op de Dordtse Biesbosch Callie, little joke.
Nee erg goede composition from that low sun, good colours, exelent depth and a great note, goed gedaan.

The graduation of the golds into the blues is just superb.
It surprises people when geological time takes a sudden leap forward like that, we tend to think of it going smoothly forward, we forget I think that every now and mother nature throws a woble, and changes the canvas a bit.

Callie, this is so natural and warm... I like it very much, very well balanced, all perfect. The only critic for you is that you did not choose a Large Version for posting this one. Thanks.

Nice shot Callie. Great colors and DOF. Congratulations on a very good photo. Greetings from Alabama. Bill

I'm glad you posted this and this combined with your note makes for a special posting to remind us what mother nature is like when she is in a bad mood.

I was surprised to see how small this was - just 100 kb and 700 pixels wide. And as always with scanned images, they need to filtered for noise in the sky. As for the landscape and the note: stupendous.

Callie,
i know little about the birds, but i could appreciate your beautiful landscape photos! it's a place of ideal beauty or loveliness,i will neven see them until i step out of the city!
the color contrast made a warm sunset pic for me,i like it so much!
cheers,
Xu
