The wonders of Costa Rica :
I already presented to you animals of Costa Rica that had their ancient ancestors in Laurasia or in Africa. This Northern Tamandua (Tamandua mexicana, La Tamandua mexicana, Nördlicher Ameisenbär. Myrmecophagidae) is an example of original South American mammals, the Xenarthra. From what we know today about plate tectonics, South America became quite isolated from other Gondwana fragments (Antarctica, Australia, Africa, Protindia) holding on to some ancestral Marsupialia and Placentalia already present in Gondwana.
You may note several things here: the Ant Eater is looking for ants in a tree nest with its big claws, elongated head and long tongue. The ants spray a lot of formic acid (sic!) around which does not bother the Tamandua. As my University teacher, a Zoo director, told us:" to make a captured Tarandua eat fruit, you have to douse it with formic acid".
With its hind leg the animal is scratching the stinging ants off. There is a prehensile tail like in New-World Primates, a case of convergent evolution.

Technicals: f/4, 1/100 sec, 200 ISO, 600 mm equivalent, no flash. Expert forest photographers would use a flash with a focussing fresnel lens.

This closes my series of Costa Rica pictures. Luis Vargas (Chiza) has presented on TN a remarkable series of Costa Rica pictures.

Guten Morgen Dieter,
Peter

This is a fascinating capture of a Tamandua eating ants on a tree, Dietrich. Excellent point of view to bring out the intensity of the activity. Your erudite note makes appreciating this image much more pleasurable.
Thanks.

Hi Dietrich, fantastic capture of this very rare guest of the TN gallery, caught while it's eating its prefered food...great sharpness and top quality despite the difficult light and location. Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano

Hello Dietrich,
Attractive species! Even in such unfriendly location, you managed to get good details and perfect focus on subject. It could have been better, to frame it vertically, IMHO, in such way you could get rid of busy location.
Thanks for sharing

Srikumar
