Knapweed Fritillary (Melitaea phoebe)

There is more than 15 species of fritillary in Central Europe and all strongly resemble each other.
They reach dimensions of pearly which they approach by brown colouring and their black wings with spots.
However, their best distinctive character is in the drawing of the lower face of the posterior wings on which there are never pearly spots.
The knapweed fritillary reaches 25 to 38 mm of scale.
We can find it in the meadows, at the edge of wood and it has a preference for the wet places.
It has one or two annual generations according to climatic conditions.
We can see gatherings of them on the wet ground or beside the water puddle pools.
The caterpillar is black, dotted of blue, but the conical and hairy protuberances which characterize it are clear brown.
It lives mainly on the plantain, the centaury, hibernate between sheets connected by wire of silk or in foam and transforms to next spring.
The chrysalis, suspended by the head in bottom, is sunk with white wing sleeves. Distribution: the palearctic area, British Isles in Japan.

I like this shot because it has surprised me by its very saturated colours, and I find the eyes very beautiful.
I hope that you will like it too.

Nice and unusual POV, Sebastien! Is this a "hairy-back" LOL.

Sebastien, I am jealous of the results you get from this Sony and the close up. This is another feather in your cap when it comes to quality post. Fantastic clarity and DOF. Masterpiece.

superbe photo !
tres belle couleurs, nettete parfaite, bonne presentatoin...
very good shoot.

Beautiful angle on this butterfly, funny how one antenna points directly at the camera ;-)
Great colours. I could have wished for a bit more DOF, but if F-8 is your highest, then you surely placed the DOF where it has the best effect ;-)

Sebastian, Very good detail, color & the exposure is perfect on the edge of bright but not too much. It's effect is to make the colors alive & vibrant. Very well done!

Impressive sharpness Sebastien, mainly in the forcebody of the insect and the flower.
Lamentably the F8 of ours cameras, prevents a focus in the totality of the image as in this case.
Colorful and composition with the habitual quality, like your note.

I love your work! This post is up to your usual very high standard. The pose on this butterfly with the wings in line is great. You captured it with excellent color and DOF

Thanks for posting

This is a beautiful capture of the fritallary. The composition is somewhat unique because of the angle you shot it at. Colors and exposure are excellent too. My only negative about the photo is your choice of frame; this capture shouldn't have something to draw the eyes out of the photo.

Very nice Sebastien.
Great sharpness where it counts , good composition and nice colours.
Good note .
Well done.

Well Sebastien,
It is Quite good, but, yes but it's not perfect. The composition is very nice but I miss some details, and I think you know as a pefecionist what I meaning by this.

Another perfect macro image!! Very nice compo and colours.
