Hello my Friends!
Today another picture from Scandinavian trip, and another insect from the area of Lapland :>

This is a male of Azure Hawker - Aeshna caerulea (Stroem, 1783) (Odonata: Aeshnidae)- one of 9 species from this genus living in Sweden and one of only a few dragonlies occurring so far in the North.

Distribution: mainly north part of Eurasia (polar regions), in Europe common only in Sweden, Finland, and Estonia, noted also from some other countries in wchich it is found usually in mountain areas, including e.g. Poland, Czech Republic, Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia.

Habitat: alpine and arctic moors, heaths and tundras where it breeds in bog pools and sedge swamps

Flight period of adults: May-August (in most areas July-September)

Size: up to 62mm (one of the smaller European Aeshna species)

Sexual dimorphism: male blue, female browish

Food: different smaller insect species (in place where this specimen was photographed, many individuals of this species were hunting mainly for mosquitos! You can see a single mosquito on the tree trunk above dragonfly! :>)

Behviour which allow to survive in cold regions: this species is know as basking on light surfaces thanks to them its body warms. When it try to bask, it usually does it on the tree trunks (picture!!!) or stones.

This picture was taken during one-day walk (some 38km) in the Muddus National Park, N Sweden. The day was cloudy and rather cold.

And last but not least I would like to dedicate this photo to Odonata lover from my home-town - Grzegorz (red45) :>

Incredible capture, Radomir. Such a lovely blue insect. You've got such detail from the tree, even, that I cannot tell where the wings end and the tree begins. Thanks for sharing.
Penny

Czesc Radek!

To chyba rzadkosc. Super fota, moze troszke za ciemna, ale to pewnie kwestia indywidualnych ustawien monitora.

Hello Radomir,
a very beautiful and interesting macro shot of the Azure Hawker, very good sharpness, excellent POV and DOF, a very pleasing composition with a lovely pose of the Dragonfly on the beautiful old tree ( with another small insect)
TFS
Best regards
Maurizio

Hi Radomir,

A picture worthy of being view. The insect's details are very good, the pose in vertical composition is very nice. My congratulations in particular for the light level, me seems suitable and very well worked.

TFS!

Jesús

Hi MF Radek

A superb capture of this handsome male of Azure Hawker from a splendid POV with excellent clarity and details. Nice dedication to our mutual friend Greg too.
TFS and cheers,

Hej
Fajne zdjęcie, chociaż robione w trudnych warunkach. Ładna kompozycja i kolory.
Pozdrawiam
Ania

I missed this beauty Radomir!
Though I have seen A. caerulea in Lapland, I have never been able to photograph it. This is a fine capture, perhaps a little dark on my screen, taken from a great lateral POV with excellent sharpness and colours to clearly show the features.
Nice dedication to Grzegorz!
Thanks and all the best,
Ivan

Hi Radek

Nice to see you too and hear that you've been traveling and working and all's well :)
This is a nice capture of yours of this interesting northern species, so rarely seen on TN.
To me, it's a bit interesting to see it on a tree...usually i see them flying or among reeds :) But you were lucky with this pose and you managed to take good advantage of it. Details and colors are good, but personally i feel it's a bit dark. No big deal, though.
Anyway, thanks for presenting this beautiful species that i, too, hope to see one day.

Have a lovely weekend and TFS
Horia
