From my backyard again:
I found this critter visiting Mint flowers for the second year now, it's a Mexican Grass carrying Wasp (Isodontia mexicana (Saussure); Stahlblauer Grillenjäger, Sphecidae, Hymenoptera). From what I gather on Wikipedia, the neotropic wasp has been introduced in Southern France in 1969. It spreads from there through parts of Europe. As Ron (tuslaw) pointed out, the species was shown in 2010 by Anne (anel) on TN (her picture is much better ,but judge for yourself: http://es.treknature.com/gallery/photo246267.htm).
ID: Rolf Witt, 2009. Wespen. Vademecum Verlag, Oldenburg D
The describer of the species is Henri de Saussure from Geneva (Switzerland) who undertook entomological travels to Mexico and the United States in 1854 where he met Louis Agassiz, another well known Swiss biologist. |

Hello Dietrich,
Great macro shot of this rare visitor to TN. Sharply focused resulting in excellent detail and rich natural colors. Both wasp and mint flower are shown in wonderful clarity.
Unfortunately this is not the first recorded photo on TN, but still quite rare. I know of at least one other shot from back in 2010 if you want to check it out. Well done!!
