Natrix natrix (Grass Snake) [in Turk. Yarı Sucul Yılan, Küpeli Yılan] (Old Female)

Today additional shots on the swimming of the Grass Snake which I photographed in Suğla lake . As is indicated its Genus name that it come after from the Latin word, natare, grass snakes can swimming to catch their aquatic preys, such as small fishes or frogs [please see attached WS to see Its undulating movement in water].

I’ll be away from TN approx. 5 days to realize a short trip to the western part of the Black Sea region and the vicinity of Bursa province. During this time, I wish you a nice time, good luck and all the best…

All reptiles living in water are secondarily aquatic and, with the exception of turtles, swim by means of axial propulsion involving undulating waves that are passed along the body and tail. Such swimming is associated with a large muscle mass, sometimes amounting to more than 50% of the body mass. There is a high conversion of muscle energy to thrust energy, which in some cases may exceed 90%. The more posterior parts of the body contribute most to thrust, and forces are maximized when the greatest depth of the body is posterior. Examples of adaptation to this principle are the paddle-like tails of sea snakes and the vertically flattened tails of crocodilians. Other characteristics that assist swimming are a flexible body to maximize amplitude of undulation, large ratio of muscle mass to body mass, and a relatively large body and caudal area. The energy cost of swimming is generally severalfold more economical than is locomotion on land. Buoyancy contributes to the efficiency of locomotion in water.

Ciao Bayram, great capture of wonderful natrixs with fantastic details, splendid WS too, beautiful natural colors and excellent sharpness, very well done my friend, ciao Silvio

Merhaba Bayram,

Sen her zamanki gibi "first class, business class qulity" çekmişsin :) Tebrik ederim. Eline sağlık.

Selam ve sevgiler.

Dayi harika.

Hello mon ami Bayram,

Nice to seeNatrix naxtrix active in its aquatic habitat. This is a fine capture taken in difficult lighting with good sharpness and colours and set in a fine composition with a bit of floating Hornwort. I think I would have tried to clone away the undesireable reflections, but they don't spoil the image much.
Thanks and have a good day MF,

Hello Bayram,
Not often do I get the chance to observe snakes swimming in clear water such as this, where you can get a good view of them. This is a really good shot of this particular snake showing excellent detail and beautiful natural colors. I also like your WS. which shows his movements while swimming.
