[Notas - Normas] Nota do Artista
* Pelecinid Wasp (Pelecinus polyturator), American Pelecinid (other common names)

* Size:
51-62 mm (female), 12-15 or 25 mm (male)

* Identification:
Female is distinctive--abdomen 5X the length of the rest of the body. Abdomen has six segments. Males are smaller, and the posterior end of abdomen is swollen. They are seldom seen. Hindwings of both sexes very short, 1/3 length of forewings.

* Range:
Eastern and central North America, also southwestern United States. Ranges south through Central and South America to Argentina.

* Habitat:
Forests, esp. deciduous forests.

* Season:
Typically August-September. Reported July-August (Minnesota), June-September (North Carolina).

* Food:
Adults reported to take nectar.

* Life Cycle:
Parasitoids of insect larvae that feed on decomposing wood, etc. These include larvae of scarab beetles, esp. May Beetles (Phyllophaga). Also reported to parasitize wood-boring insects. Female thrusts ovipositor into soil to detect host, lays one egg on each. Pelecinid larva burrows into the beetle larva, killing it. Wasp larva scavenges remains and pupates there in soil.

TN friends, when I met this fellow first time, I didn't know what kind of species it is, because this species has very different appearances between male and female. A female has unique abdomen like this photo.

I hope you like it and thanks for looking. :-)

Hello Kevin,
a phantastic picture! The curved abdomen was just right to get the entire insect into the frame in a suitable way. You selected the optimal point of view and depth of field, focused exactly and show the insect with high sharpness. Very impressive!!

Hi Kevin

One more fantastic macro from you, my friend and yet another interesting species you present us.
Leaving aside for a minute this impeccable shot, i would like to point out the amazing things of mother nature again: i am blown away by this another demonstration of simetry and geometry - that awesome abdomen of this pelecinid wasp almost forms a regular hexagon; if the last 2segments were equaly long with the other ones, they would make this exact structure, all segments having the same angle between them. That's a wow from me! :)
Now back to the great shot - i simply love the sharpnes of every details here as well as the perfect DOF you used here. I would REALLY be interested in the exif of this shot, so that i can learn to take photos of such quality one day.
Other than that, a terrific flash management and a great exposure, made sure you had the correct contrast and colors, too.
All-in-all: magnificent! A favorite!

Bravo and TFS
