American Avocet
Recurvirostra americana

Avocette d'Amérique (French)
Avoceta Americana, Piqocurvo (Spanish)

Avocets feed much like spoonbills, sweeping their bills from side to side along the surface of the water to pick up crustaceans, aquatic insects, and floating seeds. They often feed in flocks, a line of birds advancing abreast, sometimes entirely submerging their heads as they sweep the water for food. During their southward migration every fall, a few American Avocets stray eastward to the Atlantic Coast, where they may be seen singly or in small flocks on shallow lagoons and coastal ponds. In the 19th century, there was a small breeding population in southern New Jersey, but they were hunted to near-extinction. Recently given complete protection, they seem to be gaining in number and before long may be reported breeding on the Atlantic Coast once again.

Description: 16-20" (41-51 cm). A large, long-legged shorebird with a slender, upturned bill. Upperparts and wings patterned in black and white; underparts white. Head and neck rust-colored in summer, white in winter.

Excellent shot, and nice bird too!
Look at the horizon... water is running down to the right (look at the circles on the water).

Hi Manyee,
a decent shot with great composition and POV.
The horizon is a bit wonky but doesn't matter too much.
Well done,

Hi Manyee,

super image of very high quality.
Love the action.
You must have very good light to get a shutter speed of 1/1600.

Nice and sharp with good detail, color and lighting set in a fine compo.

Fine colours, sharpness and crop.

Hi ManYee

A lovely capture of this fine looking marsh bird and a genuine homebred CA resident at that. Not like some other postings that came and flew away as we've seen from another dubious and pilfering photographer. Well, as expected, his deeds were uncovered and he has been foreclosed in disgrace.

The composition is good and I think it was a wise choice to include the reflection even though it is slightly distorted by the waves. The colours are well saturated and the details are nice and sharp. The darkish water surface created a great contrasting BG and the exposure was spot-on.

Well done and TFS.

PS. Ha-ha-ha, please pardon my giggles, but it's not everyday that one gets the opportunity to point out some minor nit in one of your postings. Old tweezer beak here seems to be feeding on the downhill and might miss lunch altogether, but there is probably enough said about that so I won't even mention it. Mum's the word.
