[Notas - Normas] Nota do Artista
I took this on a recent visit to the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House, a division of the Missouri Botanical Gardens. He blended into the bark of this palm tree so well that only a slight movement caught my eye. I had been looking right at the area, and had not picked him out. This fellow was not listed in their photo brochure of regular butterflies, and I failed to ask before leaving, what species he was. So after quite a bit of internet research, I believe I have hin correctly identified as being from the country of Malaysia.(If anyone knows better, please let me know)

Grey Pansy
Junonia atlites , Linnaeus

Wingspan of 55-65 mm. A medium sized light gray butterfly with darker coloured wing margins. The sexes are similar. The upperside is marked with a row of post-median ocelli on both wings. There is a series of short wavy bands hanging off the costal margin of the forewing. The underside ground color is much paler, and the hind wing has an oblique line running across the wing. The markings and the intensity of colour on the undersides of this butterfly are quite variable; the dry season forms showing the lightest colour and fewest markings.

Hi Scott!

I bet it was extremally hard to spot ;-) Level of camouflage is really amazing here. Delicate patterns on wings looks great, especially four 'eyes'. Good work!

Scott, that's fantastic.

I'm fascinated about camouflage, and your shot shows this very well.

I also like texture a lot.

Wow, that´s perfect camouflage. You have exellent eyes. A very fine macro shot. Excellent details and good tones of colour. A great capture. Thanks for posting Scott. Have a great weekend.

Hi Scott,

Well I have to admit, this one is a specialist and you don't need a specialist for your eyes !!!!
Perfect example of camouflage, this fly have nothing to worry about, it will probably die at the same spot
Excellent picture, TFS

Very surprising shot, Scott. Yes, not noticeable unless a slight movement. It's a really good shot. I guess nobody will tell you here that the BG is distractive :-). Good eyes, very interesting, and well done. Thanks for that original image.

The texture here is unreal! (I mean that in a good way)
Great composition and sweet focus.
I love notes describing why you took the photo. I think they are just as important as identifying the species and the tech notes.
Wonderful job in all aspects.

Beautiful shot! This is a classic example of cryptism! This is in a place where there isn't a lot of smog! In England during the industrialization this kind desapare in favoure af its black sister. The trees infact were all covered of black pollution so the black sister was favourited!
Bye Tom
