Hatching Mantids

This is a follow up to the laying mantis I posted a while back. The laying mantis can be found here. I visited friends out of town on the weekend and knew they could hatch anyday now. I was extatic when I got home and saw one already out.

PLEASE CLICK FOR LARGE VIEW

The eggs laying took place on the 22 May 2004. They hatched today! (13:20 Timezone: GMT +2h) The incubation period lasted for 113 days. On average they take 5-6 minutes from the head appears until they are fully emerged. Once emerged they sit perfectly still. The stone wall lending itself nicely for camouflage. An ant gripped the second hatchling and scurried away with it. They are very small +\- 2-3mm. (a ballpoint pens' tip covers them completely)

The place were they hatched was not ideal for taking photos. But I used all the valuable tricks I learned from you guys (like using a paper infront of flash and reflecting light of the paper onto the subject) to try and get light on them. They were to high up on the wall to use a tripod so all the photos were taken from hand. I am still a bit shaking from the excitement but will keep a keen eye on them to see what else they are up to.

The last photo the little critter assumes the praying position 12 minutes after birth. He looks so adamant.

Wow, very nice Gerhard. And very well done considering how small you say they are. I've never see anything like this before so I am wel and truely impressed.

Gerhard, I found this set very interesting. These are excellent shots with the subject so very small-reminds me of the Jumping Spider I photographed at 1/8". These are smaller? Excellent note. Thanks for a great post!!

Great Gerhard.

So Gerhard,
Your not only a bird specialist but also a macro specialist.
Naast de vogelmannen uit Sud Africa, krijgen we nu ook de macro man uit Sud Africa. En we hadde ook al een roofdieren man. fun. Erg goede reportage en elke foto is erg mooi genomen. Mijn complimenten Gerhard. Exelent job.

Gerhard just superb, such detail well worth keeping an eye on them, have you radio tagged a few so we can watch them grow up ;0))))#.

Gerhard

Very well executed series of these little critters ;-) Interesting to see their first, tentative steps into the world, especially in no. 3 which shows that also mantis youngs sometimes have trouble keeping track of their legs ;-))

This is just great this Treknature site. The time and effort people like yourself put into their posts makes the internet very much an educational tool. Great photography and content Gerhard.

photo et moment fantastique; on dirait qu'ils ont posés!

This is outstanding work. What a pleasure it must have been to witness this rare event. They are so small, and yet you have captured all the details extremely well.

This is an exclusive serie!

Great to see you got them. It is very impressive shots for how small the hatchlings are. Very well taken, and realy put a smile on your face to see them. So when is the 1st to school photos coming?
