Hello Friends,
Today I'm posting some of my holliday hunts. As the weather is terrible and I also feel terrible having cold (not the nicest way to spend a weekend) I browsed my summer photos to cheer myself up a bit. So here you have:

Celastrina argiolus (Linnaeus, 1758) - Holly Blue
Family: Lycaenidae
Subfamily: Polyommatinae

This widespread species (entire Europe, North Africa, Asia) is rather common both in natural habitats as well as in city parks and suburbs.
It flies from mid-March to mid-September and is known for its large fluctuations of population abundance - a phenomenon possibly caused by a relationship with parasitic wasp.

Caterpillars of this species live on Holly (Ilex spp.), Dogwood (Cornus spp.) and Ivy (Hedera helix).

The species is very characteristic for its pattern on the underside of wings (workshop 1) and for sex dymorphism expressed on the upperside of wings. On this picture you see the male, in workshop 2 you may observe the female.

Please note the unsharp wings and abdomen of the female. It's not a result of focusing problems but effect of fast wing movement and trembling abdomen with which the female was attracting the flying males for copulation.

Hello Michal,
Nice to see you posting again and I hope you soon feel better! It takes some effort to prepare body and soul for the darkness of autumn and winter ahead! This is a capture that certainly helps to cheer one up - A lovely Holly Blue. Excellent POV, great sharpness and lovely light and colours. It really shines against the dark background!
Many thanks and best wishes, Ulla

Saludos Michal: J. Ignasi Tejedor.

Czesc Michal!

Bardzo ladnie uchwycone odcienie niebieskiego na skrzydlach. Motylek calkiem popularny nawet u nas :-) Podoba mi sie kompozycja z rozlozonymi skrzydelkami. Ciemne tlo tez pasuje do calosci. Jakis pozytek z grypy przynajmniej - nowe zdjecie na TN :-)

Hello Michal,

What a fine contrast between the colors of the butterfly and the background. You have chosen a very good DOF showing sharp details of the butterfly. Due to the well focuse image you have rendered very well the heary body of the insect as well as wing's texture.

Thank you for sharing,

Hi Michal

A very beautiful macro here from you and an overall outstanding presentation of this species from all the 3 photos.
The different POVs and sexes you show us give an exceptional idea of the characteristics of this lovely butterfly - the Holly blue.
Here, in this shot, its color really stands out thanks to your spot-on exposure control and the terrific contrast with the naturally dark BG.

Bravo and TFS

Hello Michal,
A superb open-wing capture of a second gen. male Holly Blue taken from a fine POV with very good sharpness against a fine dark contrasting natural OOF BG. Here the use of flash is to a fine advantage.
TFS this beauty,

Hello Michal

A superb capture here Nicely off centre with a good angle. Textural detail is fantastic and your colour saturation is just right. Interesting notes too.

TFS kind regards Helen
