Lyciasalamandra fazilae (Fazıla’s Lycian salamander) [In Turk. Fazıla’nın Kara Semenderi) (Females)

Today i am presenting double Anatolian tailed lady as a main shot and also a very young, funny lady with an opened-mouth ready to capture a fly meal:) as a WS from the same location (Dalyan, Muğla province).

Here i’ve used different camera settings. May be you can say which one is better!

TFL and have a nice Saturday!

Cheers,

This terrestrial tailed-amphibian beauty is restricted to the southern Anatolian coast, Turkey, where it is found from north-west of Fethiye to the eastern shore of Köyceğiz Gölü (Koycegiz Lake). It is also found on the islands of Tersane and Domuz. It ranges from sea level up to 1,000m asl. Its natural habitats are temperate forests and Mediterranean-type shrubby vegetation. It is threatened by habitat loss. The species is viviparous, producing one or two fully metamorphosed young; the gestation period is about one year.

This taxon was formerly considered to be a subspecies of Mertensiella lushchani. It has been elevated to species level, and assigned to the genus Lyciasalamandra. The genus with 7 species (L. luschani-from Fethiye, Dodurga, Kaş & Finike, Meyisti & Kekova islands) , L. atifi-from Alanya (Türbelinaz) to Akseki, L. antalyana- from Antalya (around Yağca Köyü, Kedetler), L. billae-from Kale (Antalya), L. fazilae, L. flavimembris- from Marmaris (Muğla) and L. helverseni-Carpatos island) ranges from Greece to the south and southwest of Turkey as well as some islands including Meyisti, Kekova (Tristoma) and Carpathos.

Fazıla’s Lycian salamander differs from all other Lycian salamander species and subspecies (L. l. luschani, L. l. basoglui & L. l. finikensis) by its ground colour and pattern. In adult animals the upper side of head and trunk is orange red. The maculations on the head and back are light brown to dark brown, of irregular shape and size, but usually not so widespread as to hide the red ground colour. The total maximal length is 14.1 cm.

Hello Bayram,
Two fantastic shots for sure, but I personally like the workshop image best. Great work my friend displaying these wonderful salamanders for us to see.

Dear Prof Bayram, I just went through your revised profile and was deeply distressed to know that you underwent an intense sense of frustration and despair through some unfortunate events/reactions occuring on TN. It just so happened that in the past one year, I could not remain active here due to my taxing job responsibilities and was thus unaware of these developments.
However, I must admit that I do agree with some of your observations on the current scenario on TN. The essence of this site that emerged strongly in the initial years of its existence has, without any doubt, disappeared almost completely now.
Nevertheless, it is my strong conviction that serious-minded nature lovers will remain impervious to negative influences creeping into TN. I am happy that after a rather impulsive reaction of scrapping your great work from the site (forgive me for my frankness) you have resumed to post your pictures again.
Your specialization in reptiles becomes more than manifest in this picture of two Anatolian lizards basking in the sun.
Keep the positive spirit up, my friend. Life must go on.
Warm regards.
Ram

Dostum merhaba,

Amicalement
Laurent

Merhaba Bayram,
I agree fully with Ram about the disappointment, TrekNature losing all your valuable contributions. All this happened while I was ill - and I am amazed.

Living in an arid area, I never see Salamanders and did a bit of reading... and found it very interesting, that

many salamanders are blind (living in caves); the Hellbender (North America) hides the eggs under a stone and defends them agains intruder as well as against his own family; Tiger Salamanders trick a female - who is busy picking up a spermpackage from her chosen suitor - by quickly positioning his own sperm package on top...

Your picture is fascinating, showing the protruding (frog-like) eyes of the Ladies. Is there a theory, why their and the frogs'eyes are sticking out (or do they all have a thyroid problem?)

I also notice on the right front leg of the animal on the left, that it has some sort of warts or is it a parasite?

I do prefer the Workshop image - do not know enough about settings:-) - but because it shows the facial expression. But both photos are excellent from the technical point of view like ALL YOUR WORK.

Thanks for continuing to educate us amateurs.
Have a nice evening
Warm regards
Ingrid

PS: My Hard Disk needed reformatting, and I lost my Turkish lessons.

Ciao BBB. Special light and colours in a great compo which would have been better with an uniform BG. (Only my opinion). But you could not choose MF!

Bayram hocam bu da çok güzel ama bence WS deki çok daha güzel.
Ağzı açık yakalamak kolay olmasa gerek. Emeğinize sağlık hocam. Saygılar.

Harika ikili,
En güzel dileklerimle,
hoşcakalın.

Hocam süper. Keşke Kıbrıs'tada semender olsaydı. Çok özel kurbağalar bunlar. Elinize sağlık. Saygılar.
Nazım

Ben bunları görsem kertenkele derdim. Ama sen kurbağa olduklarını söylüyorsun. Çok ilginç. Daha öğrenecek çok şey var senden. Ellerine sağlık.
Gökhan

Hellow Bayram,
Nice POV and a pleasant composition. The little salamanders have formed a soft yet clear ontrast to the greenish tones of the ground.
