[Notas - Normas] Nota do Artista
Was attending a teachers conference in New Mexico over the summer and was able to do some hiking in the surrounding hills. Was caught up with my tripod taking pictures of a warbler when this tiny hummingbird appeared eating from these thistles. I managed to get closer and through my lense realized this was not a hummingbird at all but a very large moth. I now believe this is a hawkmoth, the exact species I am not sure of. Its about 7-9cm long and I was able to watch it unfurl that equally long proboscis. These are the moments I feel priveledged to have been a part of.

Nice capture Chris! Very well composed with an excellent POV. Good details and colors in this hard to get shot. Well done.

I know how difficult it is to catch these (I have a bunch of bad ones in my files:-), so, this is well done, Chris, even if, to my taste, the moth looks a bit noisy, probably due to selective oversharpening. Anyway, very good composition, with the sharp thistle on a nice background.

Hi Chris, a beautiful shot - the moth has good sharpness, this is not easy to do.
The fower is marvelous, perfect DOF and pretty colours, very good argangement, thanks

Waooh!!! what meesterstuk. splendidly to top to look at done and complete beautiful colours groetjes Lia

Sharp and detailed, good action blurring on the wings, just too noisey. Try running it through some noise reduction software like Neat Image (www.neatimage.com) to smooth it out and remove the noise.

Well done on a great shot. Sorry this is rushed, almost out of battery power on my note book. Well done. Thanks.

Fabulous capture, it does look like a hummingbird, but you're right it is a moth. Awesome job focusing the proboscis.

Very nice capture of this moth... The insect is very sharp and with good details. This is an excellent composition to catch the moth while eating.
And as before said, there is some noise in the background.
Very well done!
PS: Ihave posted a workshop to your picture... I hope you don't mind.

Super capture...and could this moth have picked a prettier flower to feed from? I think not!

Wow, Chris. This is a fantastic shot. I really like the blur of the wings showing motion. I've never seen a moth this large. The composition, detail and colors are all very good. Well done from a fellow teacher! Thanks for sharing this great shot.

Good shot! I like the movement blur of the speedy wings as it gives the picture a sense of motion. Great colors, well composed and excellent details. I really thought this was a hummingbird when looking at the thumbnail. Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Great shot!
Dificult to do!
Yes, it's a moth.
The specie is a Hyles livornica (Esper, 1779), from the Sphingidae Macroglossinae family.
Known as Striped Hawk-moth in english.

Dutch name is gestreepte pijlstaart.
Very beautiful picture of this species!
TFS

Hi chris,
I've been watching these little creatures this evening in my garden,I was totally fasinated with them exspecially as I have never seen them before & no camera at hand when needed!!
I think it's a "humming bee hawk moth"
