[Notas - Normas] Nota do Artista
I spotted this uknown member of the Orthoptera order on sunny rocks of Belogradcik town, in the old Turkish fortress Kaleto. It was not easy to notice, I saw only because when frighten it flew away few meters showing its bright red hind wings. When sitting still it matched the background nearly perfectly.

Such camouflage is the method which allows an otherwise visible organism or object to remain indiscernible from the surrounding environment. Examples include a tiger's stripes and the battledress of a modern soldier. Camouflage is a form of deception.

In nature, there is a strong evolutionary pressure for animals to blend into their environment or conceal their shape; for prey animals to avoid predators and for predators to be able to sneak up on prey. Some animals use mimicry, seeming to be something else, such as a leaf, a stone, a twig, or a similar but more dangerous/poisonous animal.

Some mimics also simulate the natural movement, i.e. of a leaf in the wind, this is called procryptic behaviour or habit. Other animals attach or attract natural materials to their body for concealment.

A few animals have "chromatic response," changing colour in changing environments, either seasonally (ermine, snowshoe hare) or far more rapidly with chromatophores in their integument (chameleon, the cephalopod family).

Wow, very well done ! Great sharpness and details. Yeah, composition is like a monochromatic painting and on purpose. You cannot put this cricket on a red flower, it simply wouldn't be credible. Good title and informative note. Thanks for sharing, Patrick

Hi Michal,
the perfect camouflage, so what should I say about this insect, I can't see so many details, of course it is very sharp, but I cannot tell you something about contrast ;-)
Hahaha, now we're in trouble, so - no more words, only, congratulations, you have very good eyes, you found him, thanks and bye

I love those mimicry photos. This one is very good and sharp. Since the wings are red, it is likely Oedipoda germanica, the red-winged grasshopper.
Excellent work and a good eye!

Perfectly camouflaged and very hard to spot! I like your interesting note and refreshing picture. Looks like this insect is perfectly painted to live between these lichens[?]. Great observation and post Michal!
