you don't have to be instructed on what's great about this picture, you know exactly what you are doing. The light! The background! The composition!

Hi Gisela,
looks like a Hamadryas (the butterfly, not the ape) to me, a Cracker as Ron said. In the Southern US you find Hamadryas feronia, in Central America several species of this genus. And yes, we are allowed to marvel about the intricate wing pattern. So did a few hard-working physiologists that unraveled the ways of rapid signalling between undifferentiated cells that lay down the pattern (see e.g. J.Otaki, 2008. Review: Physiologically induced color-pattern changes in butterflies. Journal of Insect Physiology 54, pp. 1099-1112). Best regards, Dietrich

Hi Geoffrey,
you were lucky with this shot, you caught the animal with the characteristic orange teeth! While swimming, the shoulder part of the body remains under water. And you were right with your pun, it's an American in Paris, the Nutria or Coypu (Myocastor coypus) has its origin in Southern South America. And you are right too, it was bred in Europe for its fur. Escaped animals established colonies in the wild but severe winters take their toll (I owe you, Wikipedia).
Thanks for the interesting contribution. Best regards, Dietrich

Hello Luciano,
I am pleased that you don't ignore the Geometridae in your incredible collection of excellent butterfly shots. They are often small and reveal their elegance only after taking a macro shot. Thanks for sharing and the very useful comment, and thanks for your comment on my Crane fly.

good to see you in full force :-) The shot of the Jewel bug in the shadow is just incredible. It's even a demonstration of what the colours might be for: to shine even under dark conditions. Compliments. Thanks for commenting my Dipteran!

Bonjour Pierre,
Amicalement, Dieter

Hi Ron,
it's confusing, the many Tenebrionid beetles you can find in the Steppes and even deserts. This one I would call Pimelia>/I> sp. not knowing any better. The darklings are difficult to shoot, the uniform blackness does'nt help. But you did it just right.
Thanks for your comment on my picture. I will not post pictures on a regular basis because I don't have enough that might interest the TN experts.
My best regards to you, Dietrich

Hi Laszlo,
I don't comment on your postings but I admire your work, the many fungi species you present us like this Russula (never heard of that one before ...)
Thanks for your nice words. I will not contribute regularly since I have not enough material to show to the admired group of TN experts.

I still admire your rich contribution to this site even if I rarely comment on your postings. This Barbet is a real hit! By the way, I am 5 years older than you, March 21 is my birthday and it is celebrated all over the world :-) - as Nowruz !
But no more cheap bragging, I don't want to be confounded with some other guy much in the news lately ...
Thanks for your nice words. I will not contribute regularly since I have not enough material to show to the admired group of TN experts. My material is being prepared to go to a national agency that is publishing scientific books on various groups of animals of Switzerland.

Hello Ishi – Very good picture of this Narcissus tarzzetta. Excellent, view showing us all the details of the flower, coralla and androecium. Colours of the flower properly caught. Many details perceptible.

Technical achievement

• Good focus on the flowers
• Perfect exposure with an appropriate choice of aperture/speed and iso speed rating for the flowers
• Acceptable depth of field and sharpness
• Acceptable contrast
• Acceptable sharpness showing many the details of the flowers and their morphology; maybe could you have improve the sharpness through a different lens aperture/speed and iso speed rating. An alternative could be to improve the sharpness and contrast through the post treatment; I propose you a workshop
• Precise white balance and exact colour rendering
• Good post processing without any excess
• Good background blur

Impact

• Interesting picture showing the flowers; good capture of this Narcissus.
• Good presentation with simplicity. Maybe could have it be better to remove the “extra flowers” from the background
• Efficient framing and composition with an appropriate disposition in the centre of the frame.
• Regarding your different POV, I prefer Altered image #1

Thank you for the sharing.

Have a good day.
